Ashland packs a lot into a small town: a village center along Main Street and the Squam River, the exit-24 corridor off I-93, frontage on Little Squam Lake, and rural back roads climbing toward Holderness and New Hampton. The village has municipal water and sewer service, which puts most of the dense housing and the downtown buildings on a public system — a real difference from most of the surrounding towns.
The village stock is old, built for the mills that ran on the Squam River, and it carries the plumbing you’d expect: cast-iron waste lines, galvanized supply where nobody has replaced it, and a lot of two- and three-unit conversions where a single-family house was cut up and re-plumbed decades ago. Multi-family plumbing has its own logic — one bad drain affects three tenants, and a shut-off that isolates one unit is worth its weight.
Away from the village, along Owl Brook Road, Highland Street’s upper end, and out toward the town lines, it’s wells and septic. Little Squam frontage adds seasonal camps and cottages with the standard shutdown-and-startup cycle.
Ashland is also a town where the practical answer matters more than the ideal one. A lot of these are working buildings with real budgets, and the right recommendation is often to repair well now and plan the replacement, not to sell somebody a system they don’t need.
