Cross the Winnipesaukee River from Tilton and you’re in Northfield, but the built-up part of town on that side functions as one village with its neighbor: shared water service, shared history, and the same connection into the state Winnipesaukee River Basin sewer system. The housing near the river is largely nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century, built for mill workers, and it carries the plumbing of that era where it hasn’t been redone.
Climb out of the valley — Bay Hill Road, Oak Hill Road, out toward Canterbury and the Sanbornton line — and the picture changes fast. Houses spread out, lots get large, and drilled wells with basement pressure tanks become the rule. Those ridge properties get the full force of a New Hampshire winter with a lot less shelter than the valley houses, and exposed well lines and unheated garages under living space are the usual freeze culprits.
Northfield also has a fair amount of housing that has been added onto over generations, where a mudroom became a bathroom and a porch became a laundry room. Those retrofits are where we most often find plumbing run outside the insulated envelope — a washer standpipe against an exterior wall in an addition with no heat run to it is a January phone call waiting to happen.
